Pregnancy Care

Now that you are pregnant, your main concern is to keep you and your unborn baby healthy. It is imperative to find good prenatal care so a medical professional can monitor your baby’s (or babies’!) development. They will also perform routine testing so you know what to expect regarding the future care of your baby and can make appropriate decisions for your family. If you are wondering where you can find the best pregnancy care in Kent, Ohio, AxessPointe Community Health Centers is your answer.

We are here to help answer any questions you may have before getting pregnant and any time during your pregnancy. We will work with you to ensure the healthy growth of your child and help you choose a comfortable location for delivery.

Your Recommended Pregnancy Care Schedule

Once you know you are pregnant, call our Kent location to schedule your first prenatal care appointment. (If you want to discuss your health and any concerns about getting pregnant beforehand, please call us to schedule an appointment, as well.)

Pregnancy is considered 40 weeks, beginning from the start date of your last menstrual period. Prenatal care visits follow a standard schedule, depending on how far along you are:

  • Weeks 1-32: Prenatal checkup every 4 to 6 weeks
  • Weeks 32-37: Prenatal checkup every 2 to 3 weeks
  • Weeks 37-40+: Prenatal checkup every week until delivery

If your pregnancy is considered high-risk, due to age, health condition or concern with the pregnancy, you may be advised to schedule prenatal care more often.

To make the most of your pregnancy care appointments, keep a list of questions you can bring with you to the appointment. Your health provider will do their best to answer any and all questions and give you advice to ease any discomfort you may be experiencing.

What To Expect During Your First Pregnancy Care Visit at AxessPointe in Kent

Our providers are trained to help you develop healthy habits throughout your pregnancy, starting Day 1. At your first prenatal visit, you will talk through your medical history as well as your family’s medical history. They will then perform a checkup, which most often includes:

  • Blood and urine tests
  • Blood pressure reading
  • Breast exam
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap test (if you are due for one)
  • STD test
  • Disease screening

Your provider may also speak with you about your eating and exercise habits and talk to you about adding a prenatal vitamin to your routine, if you have not already.

If you have any questions regarding medication or supplements that are safe to take during pregnancy, now is the time to ask.

Understanding Followup Pregnancy Care Appointments

Your remaining prenatal visits will likely be much quicker than your initial checkup. You will provide a urine sample upon arrival. Then your provider will:

  • Check your weight and blood pressure
  • Measure your belly to ensure proper growth of baby
  • Listen to the fetal heartbeat
  • Provide information for genetic testing options
  • Answer any questions you may have
