healthy holidays

Keeping healthy holiday habits is challenging. We all have  a lot more on our “to do” list during the holiday season.  Families are BUSY.  In fact, many patients report the holidays to be a stressful time of year.  This year is even tougher.  On top of the ordinary holiday activities, we are dealing with the impact of COVID-19 on our family lives.

This holiday season, more than ever, it’s important to protect yourself and your loved ones with healthy choices.  A healthy you means happier holidays and a healthier winter.

Start the Season Right with a Flu Shot

Influenza, or flu,  is a contagious respiratory illness.   It can cause mild to severe symptoms. Serious cases of flu can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and patients with certain medical conditions , are at higher risk of serious flu complications.

This year’s flu season concerns are further complicated by COVID-19’s impact on our healthcare system.   Many hospitals are nearing capacity, sometimes making it necessary to send patients to hospitals further from home.  This year, more than ever, it’s critical that we do everything we can to prevent catching the seasonal flu.

The best way to prevent flu is by getting vaccinated each year.  Contact AxessPointe in Kent, Ohio, and make your appointment to get this year’s influenza vaccine.

Healthy Holidays When You Make a Habit of Good Habits

Healthy habits such as minimizing exposure, wearing masks, and washing hands help prevent catching and spreading both COVID-19 AND the flu.  Making these good habits a part of your everyday life will lessen your risk of illness or hospitalization.  Lead by example, and ensure your children follow these practices.  Teaching them these habits will benefit themselves, as well as friends and family.

Encourage others in your family to get the flu vaccine as well.  Talking  with others about the vaccine and its benefits helps dispel false notions that some continue to believe.

Fighting Seasonal Depression with Healthy Habits and Care from AxessPointe

Many patients are more susceptible to depression and anxiety during the holidays and winter.  Unfortunately,  this year COVID-19 concerns are added to the mix. For patients susceptible to depression, it’s a triple whammy.  It’s essential to find ways to feel good mentally, spiritually, and physically.

First, eat well and eat healthy.  We truly are what we eat. You will feel better when you nourish yourself with delicious, healthy options.  Avoid high-carb, high-fat, and high-sugar meals.  Make it fun by trying new recipes that intrigue you.  Fueling your mind and body with healthy meals is one step toward enjoying a healthy holiday.

Second, EXERCISE.  There are lots of ways to stay active.  For example, get out and walk, work out in your home, or practice yoga.  Physical exercise keeps us healthier and releases endorphins that help us naturally feel better.  Figure out a way to work around cold temperatures and COVID-19 restrictions and get your body moving.

Third, talk to one of our healthcare providers about your depression or anxiety. Our team is here to listen and will help you find the care you need.  Seasonal depression is real.  If you have concerns, please make an appointment with AxessPointe.  Let’s talk.
