Colorectal Cancer Screening

Jokes help us talk about topics we may not be comfortable discussing. Colorectal health falls into that category for many people. As you might imagine, proctologists probably hear more jokes than most doctors! But whatever it takes to get patients to talk about this topic is just fine – because colorectal cancer screening is no joke. It’s important.

Nothing Funny about the Facts

According to the Centers for Disease Control, colorectal cancer is most often found in people who are 50 years or older. It affects men and women of all racial and ethnic groups. In fact, of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States.

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. Screening means testing to look for cancer before symptoms start. Regular screening can find colorectal cancer early when it’s small and often easier to treat. Screening can find precancerous polyps that can be removed before they turn into cancer.

Our AxessPointe healthcare providers will discuss and assess your risk factors. We will make screening recommendations based on current CDC guidelines. Furthermore, we can answer any questions you have regarding colorectal health and screening procedures. We do our best to help patients understand the risk and how to avoid it.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests

Colorectal health tests fall into two main categories. Stool tests and visual tests.

Stool tests are easiest and can be done at home. They are recommended for patients who have an average risk of colorectal cancer. If a stool test shows any abnormalities, then a colonoscopy will be recommended.  AxessPointe provides stool test kits for our patients that present with average risk factors.

Visual tests look inside the colon and rectum for areas that might be cancer or polyps. These tests include colonoscopies, CT colonography, or flexible sigmoidoscopy. Each of these tests has specific prep and sedation requirements that will be clearly detailed for you when you schedule your exam. Our AxessPointe team provides referrals for patients when a visual test is recommended.
